Gospel Reflection
In Parishes throughout the Diocese of Wollongong last Sunday we celebrated the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C. The reflection by Loyola Press explains that in Sunday’s Gospel reading Luke presents the core of Jesus' teaching on prayer. It consists of Jesus teaching a prayer to his disciples, a parable on the persistent neighbour, and assurances that God hears our prayers.
The disciples notice Jesus praying “in a certain place.” They ask him to teach them to pray just as John the Baptist had taught his disciples. Jesus teaches them a simple version of the most famous Christian prayer, the Our Father, or the Lord's Prayer.
Having taught his disciples a simple, daily prayer, Jesus goes on to reassure them that God answers prayers. First he tells a parable about a persistent neighbour who asks a friend for bread at midnight. The friend is already in bed and has no desire to disturb his family by opening the door. But because the neighbour is persistent, the sleeping man gets up and gives him all that he needs. If a neighbour is willing to help us if we are persistent enough, how could God not respond to our requests?
This teaching concludes with the reminder that if we seek, we will get a response. If a human father, with all his faults, knows how to give good gifts to his children, how much more will our heavenly Father give us? Instead of good gifts, however, Luke substitutes the word Holy Spirit. This foreshadows the gift of the Holy Spirit, who plays an important role in the growth of the early Church after Pentecost.
The parable and the concluding teaching in this Gospel leads us not to think of prayer as a series of requests presented to God. Rather, as Jesus teaches in his model prayer, prayer consists in recognizing God's holiness and his rule over all things.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 3 and I hope you all had a chance to spend quality time with your family and friends. Having spoken with quite a few parents and carers, grandparents and students over the past week, it sounds like it was a balanced opportunity for rest, a bit of catch up for some, time with family and friends. A very warm welcome to all new families who have joined the St Paul’s school community as of this term, the Babi Family, the Bardak Family, and the Cooper Family. St Paul’s is a community of spirit, hospitality and welcome and I am sure our new students and their families will experience the beauty of the St Paul’s hospitality.
It was fabulous to begin our term with community celebrations. We celebrated Naidoc Week, which of course took place nationally during the student vacation period. St Paul’s not only celebrated this very important and significant national event with various engagement opportunities and activities, but also with a wonderful celebration of the richness and diversity of Aboriginal culture and first nations people's last Wednesday at our whole school liturgy. Thank you to Miss Julianne Tonini, Mrs Jodi Marsh, Aunty Josephine Ball, Mrs Julie Ferguson and Mrs Jodi Robson for the organisation of this very important and significant community event.
We welcomed and celebrated with grandparents and parents, Grandparents Day last Friday. This was an opportunity to express our gratitude to the grandparents of St Paul’s for the many things they do for our community, the care, love and support they show our students. This day was in recognition of The Feast of Joachim and Anne which is celebrated on July 26 each year. During our Grandparent’s Day Liturgy of the Word and Blessing we recognised the importance of honouring our grandparents and thanking them for the blessings they have passed down to us in love. Thank you to those grandparents who joined our community to celebrate this occasion and to Mrs Jodi Marsh, Mrs Julie Ferguson, Mrs Kristie Bicknell and the staff at St Paul’s for their organisation and support on the day. A wonderful community celebration!!
Today a number of our Year 3 students received the Sacrament of Penance. The Sacrament of Penance is a celebration of God’s love and mercy. I would like to congratulate our Year 3 students who received the Sacrament of Penance and thank Miss Julianne Tonini, Miss Samantha Ryan, Mrs Jodi Marsh and Fr. Leo Duck for their support and preparation of the students.
School Review and Improvement Term 3 Focus
This term will see the staff at St Paul’s focus on a number of School Review and Improvement priorities which I have briefly outlined below.
- We will provide a range of faith and spiritual formation experiences for our students and staff which offer an encounter with Jesus through prayer and gospel reflection.
- There will be a focus on the pedagogy of teaching reading comprehension in Years 3 to 6 and a focus on Early Literacy Teaching Strategies in Kindergarten to Year 2. As part of this focus will be a continued emphasis on modelled, guided and independent teaching.
- St Paul’s plans to continue our focus on parent and carer engagement in student learning. It is our intention to create more effective opportunities for parents and carers to be engaged in the growth of faith and learning of their child so that they are knowledgeable of their child’s needs and growth.
On Friday 22 July Grade Curriculum Overviews were distributed to parents and carers via Compass. The Grade Curriculum Overviews outlined the core content in each Key Learning Area that students will focus on for Term 3.
Student Mathematics Assessment of Learning will be shared with parents and carers throughout the term. Students will be bringing home 2 student examples of Assessment of Learning in Mathematics following the completion of a unit. The purpose of this process is to provide ongoing information to parents and carers outlining your child’s progress in particular strands in mathematics.
Student Work in the Key Learning Areas of Mathematics will be sent home for parents and carers to view and discuss in Week 5, Friday 12 August and Religious Education in Week 8, 9 September This will provide another opportunity for parents and carers to talk with your child about the learning your child has engaged in throughout the term.
Staffing Update
Mrs Julie Ferguson has informed me that she will be retiring at the conclusion of Week 6 Thursday 25 August 2022. Julie’s career has spanned over forty years of exemplary service to the students, staff and families within Catholic Education. I wish to acknowledge the outstanding work of Mrs Ferguson who has been a staff member at St Paul’s for over thirty years and in this time has contributed so richly to the school community in many ways. Julie’s passion for Creative Arts, her involvement school, community and parish events is testament of Julies’s commitment to her profession.
I take this opportunity to congratulate Julie on her most outstanding career and professional achievements and thank her for her leadership and service to the Diocese of Wollongong. Julie will be retiring to enjoy travel with her family and on behalf of the community I wish her every joy and blessing for the next stage of her life journey.
Mrs Vennessa McGeehan has resigned from her position at St Paul’s. Vennessa has worked in the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong for eight years and seven of those years have been at St Paul’s. Vennessa has been of great support to the school community in her role in the school office and I would like to sincerely thank Vennessa for her professionalism, commitment, care and support for the school community throughout the past seven years at St Paul’s and wish Vennessa much happiness and good health.
Mrs Rebecca Nunes will be accessing Long Service Leave from Monday 8 August till Thursday 8 September. Mr James Bryce from the Catholic Education Office Diocese of Wollongong will be replacing Mrs Nunes whilst she is on Long Service Leave. Mr Bryce is a member of the School Improvement Primary Team in the Catholic Education Office and has been the previous Assistant Principal at St Michael’s Thirroul. I wish Mrs Nunes a safe and wonderful holiday and an opportunity for rest and renewal and warmly welcome Mr Bryce to St Paul’s.
Principal Appraisal
This term staff from the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong will be facilitating my Principal Appraisal. A key component of this process is for the community to provide feedback regarding my leadership at St Paul’s and you will soon receive a survey form that you will be able to complete. This is an opportunity for you to provide your feedback about my role as Principal and staff and students at St Paul’s will also be part of the overall appraisal process. I look forward to the appraisal process and know that the recommendations from the process will provide me with further insight and guidance to improve my leadership for the community at St Paul’s.
Parent and Carer Workshops Term 3
This term we will be proving further opportunities for parents and carers to be involved in Parent and Carer workshops. The first workshop is in Week 4 Monday 8 August and will be facilitated by Small Steps. The second workshop will be later in the term and will focus on how parents and carers can support their child with Mathematics. Details of the workshops are in this newsletter, see information from the School Counsellor Doreen Waddington and see information in the Numeracy page of this newsletter for the mathematics workshop. We hope to see as many parents and carers attend the planned workshops for term 3.
At St Paul’s we certainly value the relationship and partnership we have with our parents and carers. In this partnership, the responsibility for student’s learning, well being and faith development is shared between parents and carers as the first and primary educator of their child, and the school community. Thank you to our parents and carers for this wonderful partnership.
Yours in faith and learning,
Michelle Rodwell

Use of Google Classroom Platform for Classes Year 5-6
How Teachers and Students use Google Classroom
- Assign classwork
- Teachers will create classwork and add in all the necessary documents for students to work on. Students receive an email notification when there is new classwork and are able to turn the classwork in on Classroom.
- Share all relevant classroom materials
- Teachers will share learning resources, reading materials, videos, links, and handouts. This allows students to refer to them at any time, or collaborate with their classmates on learning.
- Make announcements
- Teachers can send announcements to the whole class, which students receive via email. They also see these announcements when they login to their Classroom, through Google Classroom on their iPad.
- Collaborate one-on-one or with the entire class

Parents can ask to see work samples and discuss various elements of learning with their child. Simply ask your child to show you their iPad and access the Classroom app. The child can help parents to navigate the Classroom and see the great work they are completing.
Online Safety Tips
The eSafety Commission website states “No parental control tool is 100% effective. Helping your child build good online safety habits is just as important.”
Know your devices
All the devices that connect to the internet in your home offer lots of benefits. But you also need to understand the risks associated with these devices and how to protect yourself and your family.
Explore how to use parental controls:
- on your home wi-fi network
- built into devices, including computers, mobile devices, gaming consoles and smart TVs
- through third-party software
- in apps and programs, including streaming services, web browsers and search engines
Use parental controls
Parental controls are software tools that allow you to monitor and limit what your child sees and does online.
They can be set up to do things like:
- Block your child from accessing specific websites, apps or functions (like using a device’s camera, or the ability to buy things).
- Filter different kinds of content — such as ‘adult’ or sexual content, content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism.
- Allow you to monitor your child’s use of connected devices, with reports on the sites they visit and the apps they use, how often and for how long.
- Set time limits, blocking access after a set time.
If a device or program is shared by multiple members of your family, you should be able change the tool settings to reflect each user’s age and skills.\

ST VINCENT DE PAUL WINTER APPEAL
What a success the Mini Vinnies St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal was!! Over $1500 was raised when students dressed in their pyjamas and enjoyed a warm chocolate drink and cinnamon donut. All profits were forwarded towards the local branch of St Vincent de Paul supporting the Winter Appeal. Thank you to all families. The money will go a long way towards helping residents in need within the local areaNaidoc Week
The St Paul’s Community gathered together at a Liturgy last Wednesday to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Aunty Jo had prepared our Indigenous students to present dances while Kindergarten sang the Red, Black and Yellow song. All joined the choir in singing our beginning and final hymn.
The theme this year was Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! We must all work together to ensure that the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people is based on justice, equality and the proper recognition of Indigenous people’s rights. We must commit to supporting efforts that are co-operative and collaborative so that there is real change for our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
Grandparent's Day
Pope Francis established the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in 2020. The day is marked near the feast of Sts Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus. The theme for this year’s celebration was “In old age they will still bear fruit” (Psalm 92:14).
Last Friday, St Paul’s celebrated Grandparents Day. We welcomed over 300 grandparents who were firstly entertained with poems, songs, and dance at an assembly in the hall. Grandparents then visited students in their classrooms before returning to the hall for a wonderful morning tea. It was a wonderful morning enjoyed by all.
Assemblies Term 3
In Term Three, the following grades will be hosting the fortnightly assembly.
Religious Literacy Assessment
On Monday 1st August, students from Year 4 will take part in the Religious Literacy Assessment. This will be administered via an electronic google form on school iPads. Students have been involved in practice assessments using the iPads in classrooms this last week.
The Diocese Of Wollongong Religious Literacy Assessment has taken place in Year 4 since 2003. Its intention is to influence learning and accountability and drive a culture of reflection on learning and pedagogy in the domain of Religious Education.
To be religiously literate children leaving a Catholic primary school need to be able to communicate with and be at home in Catholic society and religion in general. Thus, assessment of religious literacy focuses on students’ knowledge and understanding of the key concepts that are being addressed by the Religious Education program and the children’s ability to communicate with their religious tradition.
If students are absent on Monday 1st August, they will have an opportunity to complete the assessment the next day.
Christmas Art
Catholic schools from the Diocese of Wollongong are invited to take part in The Christmas Story 2022 – a visual arts exhibition and competition for children in Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6).
As part of the Creative Arts unit in Term 3, Mrs Ferguson will create a variety of learning experiences to help students build their artistic skills. It is essential that all artwork creation takes place on-site at school and no work is completed at home to ensure the authenticity of students' work

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PB4L)
PB4L Focus for Weeks 2 & 3 Term Three
Based on the PB4L data, the school leadership team has purchased some St Paul's handballs and we have been revisiting the expectations that students only use school equipment for play, to alleviate any 'my ball, my rules' scenarios and to ensure all equipment is stored safely. As such, we have been focusing on Playground Equipment Expectations in Week 1, 2 & 3 in Term 3.
Students are encouraged to leave equipment at home to alleviate playground issues and to promote inclusion.

Mathematics Parent Information Session Term 3
St Paul’s are planning a parent education session this term centred around how you can help your child with numeracy at home. If you are interested in attending we would appreciate your input into appropriate times to hold these sessions via the short online survey.
Dates will be provided in the Week 4 newsletter and via Compass.
Sharing Numeracy Learning
In Week 5 students will be sharing their Mathematics learning by bringing home their workbooks or via Seesaw/Google Classroom. Teachers will choose the method that best suits the learning happening in their classrooms. There is an increased focus on the importance of concrete materials in the numeracy classroom, therefore taking photographs of students using these materials may be a more appropriate form of sharing learning for some grades, as opposed to sending mathematics books home.
Should your child be sharing their learning via an online platform, please acknowledge their work by either liking or commenting on the photographs or tasks in lieu of the paper slip used for workbooks.
Parent Resources
The Department of Education has recently released a new website with practical and easy to understand resources for parents. The website includes fun everyday activities that can assist students at all ages with their numeracy skill development.
Workbooks Sent Home
This term students will be sharing their learning with home in Mathematics (Week 4) and Religion (Week 8). Mathematics learning will be shared via workbook or online platform (see Focus on Numeracy for more information) and Religion will be shared via workbooks.
Teachers use many different approaches to marking books. Some items will not be marked as they were consolidation tasks. This does not mean the teacher has not seen this work. Other items will be marked only for a set focus eg: using capital letters when writing. Some work samples will have notes directed to the child to remind them of what to do and some items will be marked for the teacher’s reference to remind them of teaching focuses for a particular child. Occasionally, there will be marking rubrics which give feedback to the student, teacher or parent about a child’s progress against the standard for that grade. Teacher’s give feedback to children through verbal means as well as what is seen in the workbook.
Your child would love you to look through their book and use this as a starting point to discuss what they have been learning. If you would like to give your child some feedback you might like to try the following format.

Professional Learning for Weeks 3
Staff professional learning is a key component for professional growth for the staff at St Paul's and a key component for teacher accreditation and maintenance as established by the NSW Education Standards Authority. At St Paul’s, we value the critical role ongoing professional development plays in enhancing quality learning and teaching. Therefore, throughout the year all staff are encouraged to engage in professional learning opportunities. The New South Wales Education Standards Authority requires Staff to ‘participate in learning to update knowledge and practice targeted to professional needs and school and/or system priorities’ and regularly ‘undertake professional learning programs designed to address identified student learning needs’. News from the CatholicCare School Chaplain
Term 3 Small Group Programs
In term 3 at St Paul’s we will continue to run a variety of programs to support the social and emotional development and wellbeing of our students. These evidence based, small group programs are developed by Catholic Care and are aligned to the PD, Health and PE syllabus. The programs will be facilitated by Mrs Monica McCann through the Commonwealth funded National Schools Chaplaincy and Pastoral Support Program.
This term we will continue to run the Good Sports, Good Mates program with some students in Year 3 and Year 5, the Keepin’ it Cool Program with some of our Year 6 students and the MPower program with some of our year 4 girls.
The Good Sports, Good Mates program is a hands-on, active small group program. The program supports students in the development of communication and cooperation skills for effective team work, helps develop an understanding of what good and bad sportsmanship behaviours are and focuses on competing against yourself to achieve your own personal best.
The MPower Girls small group program for girls from grades 4-6, provides girls with skills to maintain positive friendships, to build resilience, and fosters positive communication skills. It empowers girls to be assertive without being aggressive or passive and supports the learning of skills to appropriately solve or work through friendship / peer issues.
The Keepin it Cool small group program facilitates the development of skills to help manage anxiety, worry, shyness or perfectionism. It teaches students to recognise clues that their body and mind give when they are starting to get worried. Students learn mindfulness strategies and how thoughts can impact how we feel and how we respond and react in situations. The program helps students develop a toolbox of strategies to cope with worries and to use compassionate self-talk to help students move out of their comfort zone in little steps.

Why is Arrving at School on Time Important
Arriving at school and class on time:
● ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities scheduled early in the day when they are most alert;
● helps your child to learn the importance of punctuality and routine; and
● gives your child time to greet their friends before class and therefore reduces the opportunity for classroom disruption.
Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to the school the same way as other forms of absence.

I am happy to announce that St Paul's Primary will be holding a 'Small Steps' Anxiety Information Seminar for Parents in Term 3. The Small Steps is a program aimed at raising awareness and improving the recognition of anxiety disorders in children.
Topics covered during a Small Steps session:
- Signs and symptoms of anxiety
- Different types of anxiety disorders and how they present
- Evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders
- Referral and treatment options
- Stressors including COVID-19 and natural disasters
The Small Steps session is run by an independent facilitator, and I will also be attending. The session runs for one hour, with plenty of time afterwards for discussion and questions. If you think your child might have anxiety, or if you are just interested in what to look out for, please come along.
The date is August 8th at both 2pm and 5pm.
If you have any questions, please email me at doreenw@catholiccare.dow.org.au
Hope to see you there, Doreen
