This Sunday’s Gospel Reflection
This weekend we celebrate the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Gospel Jesus is beginning to prepare his disciples for the events of the passion – his death and resurrection. In foretelling his sufferings and death, which took place some months later, Jesus intended to prepare his disciples and other followers for what he knew would be for them a severe crisis of faith. Jesus speaking more generally to all the disciples goes on to lay down the conditions for any who wants to follow him: it means taking up ones cross and losing one’s life in order to find it. This is the path that Jesus must go and the path that all who would seek association with him must also be prepared to embrace.
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week students in Year 3 received the Sacrament of Penance. I would like to thank Julie Ferguson, Paula Potts and Fr. Leo for preparing the students to receive the Sacrament of Penance. The students were very excited to receive this Sacrament and were reverent and prayerful in the Church. I ask that you keep our Year 3 students in your prayers as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Parent-School Partnership Framework
The third partnership principle from the Parent-School Partnership Framework asks parents and the school community to maintain a safe, supportive and respectful school environment. This principle involves;
- Upholding school rules, directives, policies and processes in place to ensure the wellbeing of all, and the effective learning and wellbeing of students.
- Respecting that the school has external accountabilities in regard to staff and student wellbeing and safety.
- Following school-based communication protocols that uphold the privacy of all and are aligned with current legislation and are considerate of the school as a workplace and the commitments of families.
- Ensuring processes for raising and resolving concerns are clearly communicated and adhered to.
- Adhering to the standards of the CEDoW Social Media Statement. Ensuring our language and behaviour are not aggressive, abusive, intimidating or threatening.
Shade Sail
The shade sail on the font playground has been taken down due to damage from the recent storms. The shade sail will be replaced in the coming weeks. Thank you to all of our students who were very responsible and safe whilst the shade sail was on the ground and cordoned off. Students are very excited to have their basketball court back in action.

World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
Pope Francis has established 1 September as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, encouraging the Catholic community around the world to pray for our common home. This day calls on "every person living on this planet" to care for our shared Earth.
Next Tuesday the whole school will participate in a variety of rotational activities to celebrate this day. Activities will include participation in a liturgy and hands-on activities, reflecting on their role in being stewards of our world and care of the environment. Last week we celebrated National Science Week. The 2020 schools theme is:
Deep Blue: Innovations for the Future of our Oceans
Classes participated in a STEM Robotics Expo in the Library and had an opportunity to experiment with the Robotics we have at our school. The students were engaged in coding activities. Some of the tasks included navigating Spheros and Mbots through a maze as well as stacking towers in the VEX IQ battlefield. Some of our students played ‘Mary had a little lamb’ using bananas as a piano keyboard, using the Makey Makey. It was wonderful to witness our students using some of the 21st Century skills of problem solving, critical thinking collaborating and communicating throughout the week.
Thank you to our wonderful P&F who generously donated $5000 towards the purchasing of the robotics and to MBC Employment for their donation of the Ozobots and Makey Makey.
Some activities across the school included designing floatable boats, investigating water density, designing a floatable city to stand up to rising sea levels, investigating sustainable fishing. Thank you to all the parents who supported the students in the K-6 STEM Challenge at home. It was wonderful to see so many creative designs of sailing boats and ocean ecosystems. A special mention must go to the students and teachers in Year 2 for the grade with the most STEM Challenge entries.

Week 5
Science Week Activities
Class |
Class Comment |
Kinder |
In Kinder we had lots of fun for Science Week! We are growing our own plants. They started as a seed and now they have a stem and some leaves. We did a science experiment to learn about density. We found out that salt water is heavier than freshwater. We also learnt about how the ocean water gets darker the further you go down as it doesn’t get sunlight. We had lots of fun with the big kids having a play with the robotic toys. Science Week was great fun in Kinder! |
Year 1 |
Year 1 enjoyed celebrating Science week with a range of STEM Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics activities. We built towers, explored coding and robotics, investigated ways to keep an apple from turning brown and explored sound waves using simple materials we can find in our homes and cupboards at school! It’s been a busy and happy week in Year One |
Year 2 |
Year 2 has enjoyed learning about density and floating and sinking for Science Week. We designed and tested boats made out of plasticine and did an experiment to discover which is heavier; freshwater or saltwater? We had a great time learning about the sea too and ways we can protect our Deep Blue Ocean! |
Year 3 |
Year 3 explored how we could code Bluebots (BBots) to move around an alphabet mat to spell our own names and move around a shape mat and make the Bluebot spin a full circle on a specific shape. We also revisited our SeeSaw experiment during Remote Learning on how to design and test ‘A boat to float’. We will be using this knowledge we have learnt about robots and are going to investigate how certain technologies can help clean up our oceans. We really enjoyed programming and testing all the robots our school has available during Science Week and can’t wait to have more time to experiment with these robots. |
Year 4 |
4 Blue spent their time learning about Sustainable Tourism, with a class focus on Responsible Fishing. Our challenge was to either design a game to educate others about responsible fishing, or to design a sustainable seafood label to encourage consumers to buy seafood from sustainable sources. 4 Red went on a drain hunt around St Paul’s and were amazed by the number of drains in our school. We then began to work on ways we could empower others to protect our oceans from pollution. |
Year 5 |
Year 5 explored the inescapable effects of climate change, in particular, the global problem of rising sea levels. We heard from an ambassador of the Pacific Island nation of Kiribati and investigated possible innovative solutions for the people of Kiribati to continue to function despite their country eventually going underwater. We worked collaboratively in small groups and used recyclable materials to build a prototype for an adaptive housing solution. |
Year 6 |
Year 6 had an excellent week supporting our school in learning all about our awesome robots in our Robotics Expo! We helped each grade to investigate and use a combination of our MBots, Ozobots, BBots, Spheros, VEX and the Makey-Makey. We demonstrated how to use each of these robotics materials and taught each grade how to code the robot to make them perform specific actions. Year 6 had an awesome time showing our school all the fantastic coding skills we have learnt during our time here at St Paul’s! |
