Dear parents, carers, staff and students,
Our school days and weeks seem to be so busy with such a lot of learning and creative activities integrated into the school days.
What an exciting week of learning about books and about each other. Thank you ever so much Mrs Warton and Mrs Frendo, for the work that you do with our children in promoting good reading habits. Encouraging the students to take part in all the creative activities leading up to Book week was certainly the highlight of the week and the finale at the end with the staff play.
We certainly enjoyed a plethora of very successful and fun filled Book Week activities created by both our clever and hard working Resource Centre School Support Officers Mrs Warton and Mrs Frendo.
I sincerely thank both these staff members for the many generous hours ensuring that our Resource Centre was thematically presented to students and visitors for this special Book Week. Our students have certainly enjoyed the colourful displays of so many super heroes. The Book Week parade was once again a tremendous success with many parents, grandparents and the siblings of our students joining in the celebrations of Book Week.
Thanks also to all the parents, carers and family members who celebrated Book Week with us by attending our picnic lunch, preparing the children with their hero costumes and then attending the Book Week parade.
Father’s Day
We celebrate Father’s Day this weekend and we pray for all fathers, grandfathers, uncles and those who replace dads in their daily lives and on many occasions. We hope you enjoy this special day with your loved ones.
Reflection
What Makes A Dad?
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad –

Thanks to all those who come along to our celebratios and sincerely thank me and ask me to pass their thanks on to the staff. Your words of encouragement are valued. Thank you.
Last Wednesday, I had 49 students who had received either a Principal’s or Mary MacKillop Award so far this year.
The receiptants of the awards received a gift, a popper and a Chuppa Chup after the entertainment provided by some of the awardees.
I sincerely thank the staff who are continually called upon to do so many extras and they prepare the students and give of their time so generously. I would hope that parents would sometimes offer them words of encouragement and praise, as things just don’t happen if not for the good will and dedication of a hard working staff.
I wish all parents, carers, staff and students a happy week and a Happier Father’s Day.
With God’s blessings on you and your families.
Colleen Easton, Principal
Staff Spirituality Day - Friday 30 August 2019
All staff are anxiously awaiting their spirituality day at Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney this Friday 30 August. Our school adopted St Mary of the Cross MacKillop as our school’s joint patron saint with St Paul the Apostle.
We live the charisms of both these saints in our daily school lives here at St Paul’s.
The staff will attend mass in the chapel of Mary MacKillop, have a sister of St Joseph give us a reflection on the charism of St Mary MacKillop and we will take a tour of the museum. We will then spend some reflective time in prayer through a creative activity.
The staff will stay overnight at Mary MacKillop place North Sydney on Thursday and return home on Friday night.
We ask you to keep each of us in your thoughts and prayers as the staff spend some prayer time together.
This is a pupil free day - there will be no staff on site at school on Friday 30 August 2019.
World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
Pope Francis designated September the 1st as the annual World Day of the Prayer for the Care of Creation. This is a day we reaffirm our vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful gift that he has entrusted to our care.
We will be celebrating the day on Monday 2 September 2019 with the staff and students participating in rotational creation activities. We will commence the day with a whole school liturgy at 9:30 am please join us in the hall.
Once every year, on September 1, Pope Francis invites us as members of the Christian family to set aside some quality time to deepen our relationship with the Creator, each other, and all of creation.
On this special day of reflecting on the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, we join together with the rest of our global community to rejoice in the good gift of creation and reflect on how we care for it. This day offers a precious opportunity to pause in the midst of our day-to-day lives and contemplate the fabric of life into which we are woven.
As the environmental crisis deepens, we Christians are urgently called to witness to our faith by taking bold action to preserve the gift we share.
God of all Creation
Show us our place in this world as channels of your love
for all the creatures of this earth, for not one of them is forgotten in your sight.
Enlighten those who make decisions on our behalf, that they may love the common good,
and care for this world in which we live.
The poor and the earth are crying out.
O Lord, open our eyes and ears to their needs.
Help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future,
for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty.
Praise be to you!
Amen.
Prayer is at the centre of our lives as Christians. Praying together deepens our relationship with our faith and brings forth new gifts of the Spirit. As Jesus taught us, “where two or three are gathered in my name, I am with them” (Matthew 18:20).
I invite you to join the students as they attend Mass each Friday. The children love to have their parents attend all school events and attendance at Mass is even more special to them. Please join your children at the Parish Mass at 9:30 am
Thanks to all those who come along when our students have been to Mass.

COMPASS Parent Portal - IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Our Student Information System is called Compass. It is used to record a daily roll attendance, student participation in activities, student reports and student fee billing. All parents require login access to Compass. If you are experiencing difficulty logging into your Compass Parent Portal please contact the school office and we can reset your password for you.
We have found that when undertaking some tasks such as making payments or booking a parent teacher interview or downloading reports it is best to do this via a Browser not the App. The App on your phone does not have enough screen size to complete these tasks sucessfully.
Compass Newsfeeds:
Newsfeeds are sent out quite regularly via our Compass Parent Portal to inform / remind parents of upcoming events or changes to details upcoming events.
Please read these emails when they are sent. You don't need to have access to your Compass App to view these emails. If you click on the link in your email it will open up the Newsfeed for you to read.
Payments for Excursions / Events:
Details for all excursions / events will now be on the Compass Parent Portal. We will not be sending home hard copy permission notes for excursions / events that require payment. Consent for your child to attend and payment for the event can be made online via the Compass Parent Portal (the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong's and the school's preferred method of payment).
If you do not wish to pay online you can download the permission note from the Compass Parent Portal and complete this and return it to the school office with the correct cash (the school office is unable to give any change) or alternatively you can pay via EFTPOS at the school office.
Student Billing / School Fees
The processing of payments for student billing of school fees is now the responsiblity of the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong Finance Team. We have been advised that at this stage they are unable to provide a statement via the Compass Parent Portal. However if you look at your payments tab there is a history of all financial transactions.
At this stage if you are making payments via BPay please do not change the BPay Biller Code or the Customer Reference Number until otherwise advised. The Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong Finance Team are still working on this component of the Compass Parent Portal.
Should you be experiencing difficulty in paying your school fees, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment with Mrs Easton to discuss this matter.
Please do not hesitate to contact the school office to discuss any concerns or queries you may have about the Compass Parent Portal.

That's a wrap! From the art room to the playground, the school grounds to the library, there has been plenty happening to mark NAIDOC Week 2019 as our schools have come together to celebrate the invaluable contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have made - and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation. Book Week - Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong Article about St Paul's Albion Park
NEWS | READING IS MY SECRET POWER: 10 WAYS OUR SCHOOLS ARE CELEBRATING BOOK WEEK THIS WEEK
Jessica Sparks, Communications Officer has used her creative talents to write an article on the Book Week activities occuring across the Diocese, see below for the sections relating to St Paul's Albion Park.

Caped crusaders, crazy costumes and colourful characters – it’s shaping up to be a jam-packed week of fun and creativity this Book Week, bringing children and books together in our schools all across the Diocese. With inspiration from this year’s theme, ‘Reading Is My Secret Power’, we have a lot to look forward to!
Each year, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA)’s ‘Children’s Book Week’sees schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children around the nation celebrate Australian children's literature.
This year, our schools are holding lively book character parades and performances, and a variety of book competitions and themed activities; our talented librarians and teachers have created amazing displays; special guest authors are preparing to visit our classrooms; and teachers and students are putting the finishing touches on their Book Week costumes. Parents, grandparents and younger siblings are even ready to join in the week’s festivities!
“Book Week is all about celebration. We like to celebrate books, authors, illustrators and our own students’ many talents. We have planned a dress up parade, a picnic lunch with parents, an author visit and many competitions for the students to engage in,” St Paul’s Albion Park Library School Support Officer, Robyn Warton said.
What are our students most looking forward to this Book Week?
“Dressing up” – Keisha, aged 9
“Having a great time” – Emily, aged 7
“The books” – Hunter, aged 7
“Getting to dress up and have fun” – Ruby, aged 8
“Having fun” – Alivia, aged 8
“Having so much fun celebrating, and seeing all the decorations” – Ameirah, aged 7
“Book Week competitions like our Story Writing Competition” – Jayden, aged 11
“Getting to read the stories – the ones written by children and the ones in the [CBCA] Book of the Year Awards” – Olivia, aged 11
— St Paul’s Albion Park students
Here is a snapshot of some of the wonderful celebrations of children’s literature in our schools this week – 10 ways our CEDoW schools are marking Book Week 2019:
PARADES AND PERFORMANCES
Our range of theatrically-talented staff doesn’t stop at Holy Family – teachers and support staff at St Paul’s Albion Park; St Columbkille’s Corrimal; St John’s Dapto; Good Samaritan Fairy Meadow and St Therese West Wollongong are also putting on special plays and performances. Often a highlight of the week for students, these dedicated staff have rehearsed their parts and are now ready to act out their items for the children as part of the week’s fun.
Later this week, St Francis of Assisi Warrawong’s and St Joseph’s Bulli’s book parades will welcome parents, family and even preschool siblings to come along dressed up and join in; as is the case at St Paul’s Albion Park, who love having the local preschoolers dress up and attend their parade too. They even have their Kindergarten children performing a song and dance for the little ones and whole school community.
GUEST SPEAKERS: VISITS FROM AUTHORS
Many of our students are looking forward to a visit from an Australian author this week – to hear firsthand about their experiences with writing and their advice, as well as having the opportunity to purchase their books, have them personally signed, and take a photo with these special guests.
Meanwhile, Australian author/illustrator and children’s entertainer, Michael Salmon, will visit St Paul’s Albion Park and St Paul’s Camden throughout the week. Salmon said his visits are aimed at helping children develop their creative talents. He describes his sessions as “fast speed cartooning” which will demonstrate to the students the process of how he invents a book, from the prototype stage to printed copy.
COSTUMES AND DRESS UPS!
For most, the first thing that springs to mind when thinking of Book Week is dressing up! It’s an exciting and enjoyable time for students, and even staff, parents and younger siblings who also join in and let their imaginations and alter-egos shine.
This year, children in many of our schools are being encouraged to come dressed as their favourite literary characters, a character from one of the CBCA Book of the Year short-listed books, or something to do with this year’s theme: ‘Reading is my secret power’.
We asked some of our students what they are planning on dressing up as this Book Week and why:
St Paul’s Albion Park
“Wonder Woman, because she saves the world “ – Alexis, aged 9
“Harry Potter, because I like the movies” – Aidan, aged 7
“Mary Poppins, because I like this character best” – Scarlet, aged 7
“Black Panther, because he saves people and fights villains who are bad” – Alivia, aged 8
“A chef, because I like to cook” – Matthew, aged 12
BOOK WEEK DISPLAYS
Displays are also very popular – at Nazareth Shellharbour City, one of the school’s very talented parents drew an incredible poster for Book Week, now on display at the school for all the children to enjoy. While at St Columbkille’s Corrimal, we’re seeing lots of colour, dress ups, book displays and superhero sparkles!
St John's Campbelltown’s library is also showcasing some beautiful themed artworks from students of all grades; and St Paul’s Albion Park have thoroughly embraced the superhero theme throughout their library; while classes at Good Samaritan Fairy Meadow are engaged in a friendly competition for best-decorated door to celebrate the week’s theme – even principal, Toni Sillis, has joined in the fun!
BOOK WEEK COMPETITIONS
There are competitions galore happening across our schools for Book Week!
At St Paul’s Albion Park, students are being invited to design a comic book cover, inventing a new superhero that promotes reading; as well as guess the shortlisted books that will win each category of the CBCA Book of the Year Awards. Students are also busy playing ‘Guess the Super Staff Member’, trying to uncover which staff members are behind each cape and mask disguise in a series of photos. They also have to guess each staff member’s superhero name and superpower – some of the secret identities include:
- ‘Multiplication Marvel’, able to answer times tables at the speed of light;
- ‘The Singster’, able to create smiles, warm hearts and bring joy through their voice; and
- ‘Guardian of Ice Packs’, who will do whatever necessary to protect ice packs, regardless of shape, size or brand.
Colouring-in competitions are also a favourite, being held among infants classes in several schools including St Paul’s Albion Park
BOOK TRIVIA
It’s trivia time! Students will go head to head with each other to test their knowledge of the books students have been reading in class, as well as the CBCA Book of the Year short-listed books.
St Paul’s Albion Park is running a trivia competition at recess during the week
WRITE YOUR OWN STORIES AND BOOKS
We could have next year’s entries for the CBCA Book of the Year Awards among us, with students in our schools trying their hand at writing and developing their own books.
At St Paul’s Albion Park, The Colleen Easton Story Writing competition – personally sponsored each year by principal, Colleen Easton – encourages students to write and illustrate a short story in book format (including a cover) around the theme of ‘superheroes’. Students are enthusiastically diving into creating an original superhero that fights evil, helps others and saves the world, among other heroic adventures and feats.
Book Club - Due Monday 9 September 2019
Book Club Orders are due by Monday 9 September 2019. No late orders will be accepted after this date.

Catholic Primary Schools (CPS) Basketball Challenge
This year we will travel to Albury to participate in the annual New South Wales Catholic Primary Schools Basketball Challenge. Teams have commenced training and I thank the parents and ex students of our school who have offered to give so generously of their time to train and manage teams and then travel down to Albury for the weekend in October.
ATHLETICS - From St Paul’s through to Diocesan Representatives
While it may seem like our own school carnival was run and won many weeks ago, the representative pathways have been in full-swing over the last two weeks. We congratulate again, our 2019 Age Champions:

Our Athletics House Champion was: ST MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP
Based on results at our own school carnival, a St Paul’s Athletics team, comprising of 32 athletes, participated in the CEDoW South Coast Athletics Trials on Tuesday 13 August (Term 3, Week 4) at Kerryn McCann Athletics Field (Beaton Park), Wollongong. Each of our athletes performed to their best of their ability and gave 100% at all times. This was not only when competing but also when encouraging and cheering-on their fellow squad members. Mr McCann was very appreciative of the students’ efforts, as well as the assistance and support of parents on the day.
Whilst the team’s overall performance was pleasing, there was also some great individual honours. Holly Czornobej and Matilda Pearson, competing in the 11 years Girls category, were awarded 2nd & 3rd place, respectively. April Gray, competing in the 12 years Girls, also received 3rd place overall. A fantastic achievement from the three girls!
These three girls, along with Ava Alaban, Gemma Bishop, Cooper Micallef, Wil Moran and Janae Robertson, were successful in being selected for the Diocesan Athletics Trials, which was again held at Beaton Park on Tuesday 20 August (Week 5). These trials bring together the top four place-getters from the South Coast and West Region athletic events, who then vie for a spot in the Diocesan Athletics Team.
Of our eight students, we congratulate again, Holly Czornobej, who gained selection in the 11 years Girls 100m, 200m and Long Jump events. She will now travel to the Sydney Athletics Centre, Homebush on Monday 16 September to contest the MacKillop Athletics Championships. All the best, Holly!

South Coast Soccer Gala Day
The South Coast Soccer Gala Day was held on Friday 2 August (Term 3, Week 2) and it was a perfect day! For those who were fortunate enough to visit one of the three venues at which St Paul’s participated, you undoubtedly would have been pleased to see the many smiling faces and the amount of activity/exercise taking place. For reference, the three venues where we participated were:
- Lyrebird Park, Nowra - Junior Girls & Boys (Yrs 3 & 4);
- Darcy Wentworth Oval, Warrawong - Senior Girls (Yrs 5 & 6); and
- John O’Dwyer Oval, Albion Park - Senior Boys.
For many students participating, it would have been their first taste of gala days AND soccer.
Adding some perspective to how large this day is, let's look at some numbers from ALL the South Coast Soccer Gala Day events:
- 6 venues - Nowra, Albion Park, Warrawong, Unanderra, Woonona & Eschol Park
- Over 180 teams which equates to around 2,100 students (possibly more)!!
- Close to 100 secondary students assisting as referees
- 100's of spectators and supporters
- 6 first aid professionals. 6 risk assessments, 6 external canteens etc.
There is a substantial amount of preparation to get these events across the line both by conveners, schools and parents, so thank you to all for their efforts, especially to the St Paul’s parents who assisted by managing teams on the day.
NSWCPS Basketball Challenge
Training for the NSWCPS Basketball Challenge, being held in Albury on the weekend of October 26 & 27 (Term 4, Week 2), has commenced on a weekly basis. All training sessions are being held at St Joseph’s Catholic High School Gymnasium (unless otherwise advised) between 7:30 - 8:30am on the following days:
- Senior Girls - Monday
- Junior Boys - Tuesday
- Senior Boys - Thursday
Earlier in the year, we registered 8 teams for the Challenge at a cost of $345 per team (2 x Senior Girls, 2 x Junior Boys, 3 x Senior Boys and 1 x Junior Girls teams). These registrations were based on expressions of interest from families, however, recently we have been advised of a number of players withdrawing. Disappointingly, this has meant that we can no longer field a team in the Junior Girls division and some girls will be missing out, Senior Boys & Girls are short of players, and that the school will be at a loss financially.
Ideally, we still wish to fulfil our commitment to the NSWCPS Basketball Challenge by having our other 7 teams. The Senior Boys & Girls teams though, do need extra players. If there are ANY students in Years 5 & 6 who are interested in becoming involved in the Challenge, please advise the school ASAP. Assistance can be provided to families in finding accommodation.
Despite these set-backs, those involved in the Challenge are anticipating a great weekend of basketball, for both its competitive and social aspects!
South Coast Basketball Gala Days
The South Coast Basketball Gala Days are due to be held in Week 9, on Thursday 19 September for Juniors (Years 3 & 4) and Friday 20 September for Seniors (Years 5 & 6). As the Senior gala day coincides with St Paul’s major fundraiser of the year, the ‘Colour Fun Run’, a decision has been made to not enter any Senior teams this year. We will, however, be nominating two teams in the Junior Boys division, consisting of those players travelling to the NSW CPS Basketball Challenge.
NSWCPS ‘Kookaburra’ 8-a-side Hockey Gala Day
A new initiative by NSWCPS is the ‘Kookaburra’ 8-a-side Hockey Gala Day, who in conjunction with Hockey NSW are looking to promote the game and provide students with an opportunity to develop their skills in a gala day setting. As we have such a strong hockey contingent here at St Paul’s, we were happy to provide this opportunity for nine of our Stage 3 students: Breanna & Gemma Cresswell, Jessica Cheetham, Billie Elliott, April Gray, Ethan Aleckson, Aiden Campion, Riley Hayes and Will Schofield.
The day was held at Moorebank Liverpool District Hockey Club and although the majority of our mixed-team currently play, no experience was necessary and a free coaching clinic was provided for all students (the boys were quite appreciative of this!) prior to competing in a round-robin against other schools.
From all reports, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all students, with those less-experienced players taking away an increased appreciation and love for the sport. Thank you to the parents who also made this opportunity available to their children, particularly in transporting the team to and from the event.
Calendar Dates:
Monday 16 September (Week 9) - MacKillop Athletics Championships (Homebush)
Thursday 19 September (Week 9) - South Coast Basketball Junior Gala Day
