Gospel Reflection
In Parishes throughout the Diocese of Wollongong we will celebrated the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King of the Universe Cycle A. In Sunday’s Gospel Jesus described to his disciples the scene of the judgement of the Son of Man. All the nations will be assembled before him, and he will separate them as a shepherd separates sheep and goats upon their return from the pasture. The judgements made by the Son of Man will be based upon the acts of mercy shown to the least ones—the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the ill, and the imprisoned.
On this Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, Bishop Brian shared his vision for the parishes of the Diocese of Wollongong, entitled Come & See, Go & Make. The message from our Bishop is accompanied by a number of excellent resources which you were provided at Mass at your Parish this weekend, 1. A vision for parishes – which our Bishop invites us to prayerfully read 2. Principles and Foundations – a short explanation of key principles described in the vision document, which are also formative in our own personal faith and understanding; 3. Go Deeper – a short compendium of additional reading on key concepts discussed in the vision document.
Dear Parents and Carers,
On Friday we had the wonderful opportunity to meet Miss Angela Pecnik the new Principal for St Paul's who will begin her Principalship in 2024. Miss Pecnik was very impressed by the welcome she received by students, staff and parents and carers at St Paul's. Miss Pecnik enjoyed the opportunity to join our school at our Week 7 whole school assembly led by Year Six. Miss Pecnik brings many wonderful gifts and attributes that will enrich the community of St Paul’s and I am looking forward to hearing the great achievements of St Paul’s in 2024.
Welcome Kindergarten 2024
Last Friday 24 November we held an orientation morning for our 2024 Kindergarten Parents and Carers and students. This was the first of many parent and carer and school partnership experiences that our Kindergarten 2024 parents and carers will engage in throughout their child's education. The orientation morning was an opportunity to outline to the 2024 Kindergarten parents and carers our many achievements at St Paul's and the value we place on parent and carer and school partnership. We welcome 63 Kindergarten students to the St Paul's Catholic Parish School community and I am certainly looking forward to our students joining us in 2024.
Student Leadership
I would like to congratulate the Year Five students who presented a Captains Speech as part of the selection process for School Captains for 2024. I had the privilege of listening to the wonderful speeches delivered by our Year 5 students who have nominated themselves for School Captain for 2024. I was very impressed with our Year 5 students' understanding of leadership qualities, the importance of Christian values, being approachable and a role model for other students. In developing students as school leaders in the school community, all Year 5 students will take on leadership responsibilities and work within teams in 2024 to ensure all students are represented and have a voice at St Paul’s.
We expect our school leaders to model responsible, respectful and safe behaviours. They are a student leadership team that supports our Principal, staff and greater school community in delivering the school’s mission and vision. Voting will be finalised in the coming weeks and the School Captains and Senior Leadership Team will be announced on Friday 8th December at our farewell whole school assembly.
2023 Annual Improvement Goals
This year Staff have spent time reflecting on the progress and impact of our 2023 School Annual Improvement Goals. I have summarised each goal below and the actions that have taken place as a result of the reflective work of staff at St Paul's.
Goal 1: Students will have opportunities to demonstrate understanding of the school Catholic values through explicit teaching in Religious Education. The 4 school nominated Catholic values are Compassion, Inclusivity, Integrity and Inclusion. Core scripture has been linked and used to describe the meaning of each core value and to demonstrate how Jesus modelled the value in the Gospel. The teaching of Catholic values through connection to scripture, storytelling and other pedagogical practices are evident in our classrooms. School signage has been created to display the Catholic values and our Positive Behaviour for Learning and the school wide award system now reflect the Catholic values.
Goal 2: Teachers will have a deep understanding of the aspects of place value and implement evidence-based strategies for teaching Representing Number so that all students demonstrate growth in place value. The school's commitment to Continuous Catholic School Improvement led to a focused effort on improving student outcomes in Mathematics. Following a thorough analysis of various assessment data, the school identified a need to enhance teacher expertise in Place Value. In collaboration with Bridgeen Pritchard; Education Officer from Catholic Education Office, Wollongong, the staff at St Paul’s worked to deepen its understanding of Di Siemon and Angela Rogers' research on the importance of Place Value to the teaching and learning of Mathematics, and the outcomes and content of the ‘Representing Number’ aspect of the NSW Curriculum.
A robust assessment was introduced and administered across Kindergarten to Year 6 and teachers worked collaboratively to mark, moderate and reflect on student progress and achievement in Place Value then used this data to inform teaching and learning programs and targeted teaching opportunities at the point of need. Teachers worked with the Instructional Coach and K-2 Curriculum Advisor to embed high-impact teaching strategies including targeted teaching, collaborative learning and the ‘Talk moves’ oral language and questioning strategies to develop students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills, communication and reasoning skills and metacognition in mathematics. Teachers created scope and sequences that will facilitate deep learning through a connected approach to the teaching of mathematics and an agreed practice that reflects the pedagogical shift and professional learning gained in 2023.
Teachers engaged in targeted teaching, collaboratively designing lessons based on mathematical outcomes, analysing student work samples, and tailoring instruction to individual student levels. Professional learning sessions were strategically organised to promote reflection and a commitment to continuous improvement among teachers.
Recognising the important role of a parent in learning, St Paul’s hosted a mathematics workshop, led by students, to model engaging mathematical learning games, fostering student engagement and providing opportunities to consolidate key mathematical concepts learnt in the classroom, and at home. Parents have remained up to date and informed of staff engagement in professional learning and growth in mathematics throughout the year via the fortnightly newsletter, term curriculum overviews, homework activities and tasks, and via the SeeSaw platform.
Goal 3: Students will have an improved understanding of interpersonal skills so they respectfully interact with others. This year, we have placed a special emphasis on enhancing interpersonal skills among our students, ensuring they engage in respectful interactions with others.
Focus on Interpersonal Skills: Our aim at St Paul’s is to cultivate an environment where students not only excel academically but also thrive socially and emotionally. Through targeted initiatives and classroom activities, we are fostering a deepened understanding of interpersonal skills, empowering our students to respectfully and positively interact with their peers and the broader community.
Professional Learning for Staff: To further strengthen our approach, our dedicated staff members engaged in external professional learning opportunities. The focus of this training was to equip our educators with evidence-based strategies that enabled them to model and impart essential interpersonal skills to our students.
Our dedicated staff members have been actively engaged in collecting and analysing data through various tools to better understand and address the social and emotional needs of our students. Staff regularly collected data on student well-being through the Social and Emotional Learning Continuum and updated this in Case Collaboration meetings. Years 3-6 students participated in the Pivot survey, a valuable tool designed to gather their perspectives on various aspects of their school experience. This survey provides staff with valuable feedback directly from our students, allowing staff to gain insights into their feelings, experiences, and perceptions.
Throughout the school year, staff used the Social and Emotional Learning Continuum to gather valuable insights into the well-being of our students. This tool allowed staff to assess and track student’s social and emotional development, providing a comprehensive view of their strengths and areas for growth. The data collected was then discussed and updated in our collaborative Case Collaboration meetings and Collaborative Planning meetings, where our staff worked together to tailor support strategies for individual students.
The PB4L Staff Team analysed and used data from Pivot, Compass (behaviour) and SEL continuum to determine a school focus based on data. Class teachers used the data to reward students' behaviour through Green Zone Rewards.
Berry Street Education Model (BSEM): As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, our staff actively participated in professional learning sessions centred around the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM). This model, renowned for its focus on supporting the social and emotional development of students, aligns seamlessly with our mission to provide a holistic education experience.
Throughout the year there has been a shift with engagement and participation in Welcome Circle. Across the school, grades are utilising Ready to Learn Scales adapted from BSEM whereby students identify emotions with reference to Ready to Learn Scale. Throughout the school there has been a development of metalanguage when students are communicating their emotions.
What BSEM Means for St Paul’s: Through BSEM, our educators gained valuable insights and practical strategies to create a positive and inclusive learning environment. This model not only addresses the academic needs of our students but also places a strong emphasis on their emotional well-being, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills to navigate various social situations successfully.
Professional Learning for Parents: Parents and carers engaged in how the school effectively supports their children with interpersonal skills through newsletters and a Parent and Carer Education Workshop in Term 3. This workshop gave staff the opportunity to work in partnerships with parents and carers to develop and maintain a common understanding of student learning goals. Your partnership in reinforcing these skills at home is invaluable, and we encourage you to engage in conversations with your children about their experiences and learning.
This year staff have been excited about the positive impact these initiatives have had on the overall growth and development of our students.

Semester Two Reports
Your child’s semester 2 report will be available to you via Compass on Friday 8th December.
Teachers award students overall grades based on the common grade scale. Below is information taken directly from NSW Education Standards Authority’s website. If your child receives a ‘C’ grade, this means that they have achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills at their stage level. It is important to remember that if your child receives the same overall grade for two consecutive reports, they have made progress. Between the two reporting periods, your child will have learned new knowledge and skills of a more advanced nature.
The Common Grade Scale

Positive Behaviour For Learning
Positive Behaviour for Learning
During Week 8 teachers will explicitly teach students the procedures around being respectful when using the bathroom. Students are encouraged to use the bathroom before the morning bell and during their lunch time to avoid missing out on explicit teaching delivered by classroom teachers and support staff. Explicit teaching, where concepts and skills are clearly explained, is an essential part of the learning process. By encouraging students to address their personal needs before class, educators aim to maximise the time available for teaching and learning. Encouraging students to plan ahead and manage their time effectively fosters a sense of responsibility. Teaching students to take care of personal needs during appropriate times reinforces important life skills.
In Week 9, students will be taking part in the End of Year Mass where we will be acknowledging the hard work of departing staff. This will be a wonderful way to show appreciation and gratitude for these important members in our school community. For this reason our PB4L focus for Week 9 will be how students can be respectful in Church.
Alana Stroligo
PIVOT
Students from Years 3- 6 have completed their 2024 Pivot Survey. While the internet can certainly enhance a student’s academic and social life, increased connectivity brings increased risk of students experiencing:
- Online bullying
- Abuse
- Exploitation
- Privacy breaches
With students increasingly accessing and using apps, games and online content, it is important that they are supported in navigating and feeling safe in the complexities of the online world. Knowing how to navigate the online world is important for students in empowering them to remain safe and experience the benefits of immediate global connectivity. When students are safe online they are less likely to experience negative influences including inappropriate social behaviour, harmful content or privacy breaches which affect their wellbeing.
In Week 6, Constable Joanne Cummins visited Year 4-6 students to talk to children about safety online particularly when engaging in group chats. It is important for parents to have open and honest conversations with their children about online safety, explaining the reasons behind monitoring and emphasising the importance of responsible online behaviour. Additionally, using parental control tools and settings can help in providing a safe online environment for children.

Choir - Term 4
Wow what a term we’ve had in choir! Our numbers have grown! There are so many students from across Year 3 to Year 6 and ASPECT who want to be involved in leading the National Anthem at Monday morning assembly and in the special choir item of the Christmas Concert.
The choir students have shown the skill of commitment by coming along each Tuesday to rehearse. This term we are busy working on our PITCH and we have certainly heard the improvement. Students have really enjoyed leading their own warm ups this term. “I can sing a song in a whisper voice”. Just ask them and they’ll demonstrate.
We have explored traditional Christmas carols and modern Australian Christmas carols. We have worked hard on one song which will be performed at the end of year Christmas concert in Week 10.

Extended Student Transition to 2024 Classes
Extended Student Transition to 2024 Classes
As we inch closer to the end of 2023, teachers and students are beginning extended transition processes to support students preparing for their new 2024 class.
At St Paul's, we have developed a process that enables students to transition to their new class with confidence. Students requiring an extended transition will begin to visit their 2024 grade learning spaces throughout Weeks 7, 8 and 9 of Term 4, and all students will have an opportunity to meet their 2024 class teacher on Wednesday the 13th of December (Week 10).
All of the teachers are looking forward to meeting the students who will be in their 2024 class soon!
Update on Year 5 Leadership Process for Leadership Positions in 2024
Update on Year 5 Leadership Process for Leadership Positions in 2024
As part of the initiatives in Stage Three, to develop the Leadership Qualities of our Year Five and Six students, our Year 5 students have begun their preparation for nominations for the role of School Captain 2024, Senior Leadership Team 2024 or one of the Leadership Teams.
Each of the students who nominate themselves for School Captain will present their speech to the current Year 5 cohort. The students’ speeches will be videoed and shared with the current Year 3 and Year 4 students as well as all the Staff. The students who have been nominated to be a School Captain will then be placed on a ballot sheet.
All teachers, as well as students in the grades previously mentioned will then vote preferentially for a girl School Captain and a boy School Captain. The students will be taught how preferential voting works, and how to organise their vote to represent their wishes. The Parish Priest will be consulted and his recommendations will be taken on board. The results of this process will determine who is installed as the 2024 School Captains.
As well as the Senior Leaders, St Paul’s also offers an opportunity to be in a Leadership Team. This allows for a more distributive model of leadership where more students are able to further develop their own leadership skills. The teams include ICT (Information, Communication and Technology), Sport, Hospitality, and Pastoral Care. Along with the support of teachers, each Leadership Team will work with successful students on specific responsibilities across the school. During Year 6, students will have the opportunity to be involved in two leadership teams - one in Semester 1 and another in Semester 2.
The following timeline of events is due to occur throughout Term 4:
- Thursday 23rd November 2023 or Friday 24th November 2023 (TBC) - Student School Captain and Senior Leader Speeches to be presented to Year 5 students. Year 5 students vote on this date. Speeches are videoed and shared with current Year 3 and Year 4 students and all staff.
- Monday 27th November - Friday 1st December 2023 - Students in Year 3 and Year 4 and all staff view the videos of the School Captain speeches. Year 3 and Year 4 students and all staff vote during the week. Votes are due to the Year 5 teachers and Leadership staff by Friday 1st December.
- Monday 4th December 2023 - Thursday 7th December 2023 - Year 5 staff count votes in consultation with the School Leadership Team and Fr Leo. Michelle Rodwell (Principal) to contact the parents of the 2024 School Captains once voting is finalised.
- Friday 8th December 2023 - 2024 School Captains announced to the St Paul's school community at the Farewell Assembly in the hall. Details will be communicated closer to the date.
- February 2024 - all students in Year 6 will be presented with their leadership badges during the St Paul’s Albion Park Welcome Liturgy.
We look forward to our Year 5 students demonstrating their excellent leadership skills as they engage in the Students Leadership Process over the coming weeks.

Payment of School Fees by Instalment
NEW FAMILIES TO OUR SCHOOL
School Fees are invoiced as an annual account. However, many families elect to pay their school fees by regular instalments and as a new family to our school, we would like to offer you this option. If wish to take up this offer, please complete a Request to Pay by Instalment Form which is available on the school’s website or from the school’s administration office. On completion of the request, either email it to instalments@dow.catholic.edu.
IMPORTANT: Please note that if you currently have a child or children at another school in the Diocese and you are paying by instalments at this location, you will not need to complete another Request to Pay by Instalment. The instalment request carries over from school to school with the same frequency of payment eg Weekly, fortnightly, etc.
If you would like to pay school fees by instalments in 2024 and have previously not taken up this option for payment, please complete a Request to Pay by Instalment Form which is available on the school’s website or from the school’s administration office. On completion of the request either email it to instalments@dow.catholic.edu.

As the 2023 school year draws to a close the school would like to remind parents of the current medication procedure.
All long term medication must be provided to the school in a WEBSTER PACK containing one month's supply per pack, clearly labelled with your child’s prescription, name, quantity and time medication is to be taken. The school advises that you consult with your GP or pharmacist to discuss the different styles of packs that will work best with your child’s medication.
Should your child require short term medication, no longer than one to two weeks, the webster pack is not required. Parents are to provide the medication in the bottle or packet that it is provided by the pharmacist with the prescription clearly labelled. All liquid medication requires a syringe or medicine cup and dosage pre-drawn to be provided for dispensing the medicine.
An ‘Authority to Dispense Medication’ form must be provided to the school for all prescribed and over the counter medications before any medication can be dispensed to your child. Parents can access this form at the school office.
The school will be making contact with parents in the coming weeks in regards to the collection of medication on the last day of school for those students leaving. If your child is returning to St Paul's in 2024 and your medication will still be in date for Term 1 you will not be contacted. Should you want to collect this medication on the last day of school please email the school via info@spapdow.catholic.edu.au so your medication is ready for signature release.

Pastoral Support Workers News
The Seasons of Growth grief and loss program has concluded for years 3 and 4 with an enjoyable Celebration with the students and their invited guests. It was wonderful to see many mums attend the gathering. The students had a wonderful time sharing some stories and learnings and experience, with a focus on how they learnt what to do when they experience significant changes in their lives through grief or loss, and learning to understand that their feelings are all unique and that change is a normal part of life. Like the Seasons, change signifies growth. Over the program, the students also learnt strategies and skills to cope, problem-solve and make the best choice for them, when they experience big emotions. Many of the students' comments about what they enjoyed most about Seasons was the group activities and making new friends and being able to share their stories in a safe and supported environment. Another most significant aspect of the program was building peer support and understanding, learning helpful thinking and actions, and sharing positive affirmations, which helped them gain more self-confidence and self-esteem. Years 5 and 6 are due to have their celebration in week 9.
Thank you to everyone involved in allowing the students to journey through their changes with Seasons for Growth.
