Professional Learning - Big Ideas in Mathematics
In line with our school AIP around Mathematics, the staff have been using the NSW Mathematics K–6 syllabus to weave together meaningful mathematical concepts through the development of big ideas. By identifying overarching concepts—such as patterning, proportional reasoning, or spatial awareness—teachers can help students make connections across content areas like Number, Measurement, and Geometry.
These big ideas provide coherence, allowing the students to see Mathematics as a connected and purposeful discipline rather than isolated skills. The syllabus encourages differentiated strategies and rich tasks that promote inquiry, reasoning, and problem-solving, empowering students to build deeper understanding and apply their learning in authentic, real-world contexts.
Ready for next term, the teachers have planned some exciting learning sequences for your children that help them to make connections with the Big Ideas in Mathematics.
